Scale & Polish – The Classic Dental Cleaning

What is a Scale & Polish?

A scale and polish is a professional cleaning treatment carried out by your dentist or dental hygienist to remove plaque, tartar (hardened plaque), and surface stains from your teeth.

It’s one of the most common dental hygiene procedures and plays a big role in preventing gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.

Why You Might Need a Scale & Polish

Even if you brush and floss every day, some areas in your mouth are hard to reach. Plaque can build up in these spots and harden into tartar, which can only be removed professionally.

A scale and polish:

  • Removes plaque and tartar

  • Helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay

  • Reduces surface staining from tea, coffee, wine, and smoking

  • Leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean

How a Scale & Polish is Done

  1. Scaling – Your dentist or hygienist uses special instruments to gently scrape away tartar from your teeth, including between them and just below the gumline.

  2. Polishing – Your teeth are polished with a rotating brush or cup and a special paste to smooth the surface and remove some surface stains.

Does a Scale & Polish Hurt?

Most people find it comfortable, but if you have sensitive teeth or gums, you might feel some mild discomfort during scaling. We always work gently and can adapt the treatment to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

How Often Should You Have a Scale & Polish?

For most patients, every 6 months is ideal. If you’re prone to gum disease, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits.

Scale & Polish vs. Modern Cleaning Options

While a scale and polish is still very effective, new technologies such as Guided Biofilm Therapy and Airflow cleaning offer a gentler, more precise alternative — especially for those with sensitive teeth, gum disease, or dental implants.
